Detoxing Your Personal Care & Beauty Products 101
Did you know that in Europe over 1,400 ingredients are banned in personal care products that are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm or birth defects are banned while in the US the FDA prohibits less than 40?
The labels on the products we apply to our skin each day can be even more confusing to understand than the ones on the food we consume. For that reason I like to stick to a few clean brands whose mission is to avoid these harmful ingredients so that I don't have to worry about reading more labels. The two brands that I love are Beauty Counter and doTERRA, but there are others out there as well since more consumers are demanding cleaner personal care products.
I've been using Beauty Counter for over three years and not just a handful of their products but ones that span all of their categories including skin care, hair, body, cosmetics, sun, kids and most recently, men. Not only are they clean but they work and smell great too! For those of you with tweens/teens now is the time to think about the products they are using on their skin too.
It can be overwhelming and even more confusing to read the ingredients in our personal care products (if even available) but given that our skin is our largest organ it is equally if not more important to be aware of the potentially harmful toxins being absorbed directly into our blood stream every day. I started using Beautycounter products over three years ago because they have a NEVER list of 1,500 questionable ingredients that they will never use in their formulations so that I don't have to worry about reading labels. They are constantly screening new ingredients and test for safety and heavy metals.
Just last month I took the leap and joined this amazing fast growing brand who is the LEADER in the clean beauty space -#1 searched beauty brand on Google in 2018. Beauty counter is not only committed to making safe beauty products that work but is also active in Washington where they lobby to bring more regulation to consumers. Given my passion for cleaning out toxins from our bodies and protecting those I love, I felt it only a natural fit and extension to join @beautycounter and continue to educate people about the impact of using unsafe products on our bodies.
I know all of this can be overwhelming and confusing so similar to making changes to your diet, I encourage you to swap one product at a time ....as you need to replace a household or beauty product. We all know how important self-care is choosing safer personal care products is an easy way to start this journey.
I created this guide exclusively for you to help you navigate detoxing your personal care/beauty regime one step at a time.
Here is a sneak peak of some of the product links that are included in my guide:
Sunscreen: We use the following sunscreen products: Beauty Counter, Alba Botanica, Kiss My Face/spray. The BC sunscreen stick is the only clean product that my kids like as it doesn’t look white and pasty and doesn’t smell. Check out EWG Skin-Deep App for lots of products.
Body Lotion: My go-to body lotion is coconut oil (especially at night) I keep a small glass jar of it in my bathroom and add peppermint essential oil for a nice smelling lotion. It is also good for dry/chapped lips. I also love this Citrus Lotion and hand lotion. I recently discovered this tube of coconut oil from Conscious Coconut from a friend which is great for travel and can also be used in your hair (for dry/fly aways) and great for dry lips too.
Bath Soap I use doTERRA bath soap and body wash as well as Beauty Counter and this citrus bar of soap. Most local co-ops have a great source of natural beauty and health care products as does Thrive Market.
Deodorant: My favorite deodorant is Schmidt. My husband is now using this product too and really likes it! I also just tried doTERRA’s new deodorant and it works really well too.
Facial Cleansers: Cleansing Cream, Cleansing Balm
Tinted Moisturizer/Sunscreen: Beauty Counter Dew Tint Moisturizer
Foundation: Beauty Counter
Kid Products: My Kids use Honest Company and Beauty Counter brands for body wash, shampoo/conditioner. They all use HEllO brand toothpaste (kid friendly flavors)
